In the early ‘80s, Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola came to Tulsa, OK to catapult S.E. Hinton’s memorable characters off the pages of The Outsiders book onto the big screen.
Rather than use a Hollywood backlot, the filmmaker and crew transformed an ordinary Tulsa neighborhood into a fully functioning movie set. In 1983, The Outsiders was released, featuring a cast of young, talented actors who would go on to become household names.
The director and film crews departed, the actors and props scattered, and the local extras went back to their day-to-day lives. But, on a quiet Tulsa street corner, the iconic “Curtis Brothers House,” the modest bungalow where the scrappy, close-knit Greasers lived, loved, fought, and reconciled, remained a tangible testament to the cinematic legend.

Hugh Davis built the Blue Whale in the early 1970s as a surprise anniversary gift to his wife Zelta, who collected whale figurines.[1] The Blue Whale and its pond became a favored swimming hole for both locals and travelers along Route 66 alike.
Originally, the pond surrounding the massive Blue Whale was spring-fed and intended only for family use. However, as many locals began to come to enjoy its waters, Davis brought in tons of sand, built picnic tables, hired life guards, and opened it to the public.

The name, The Four of Wands, is from a favorite Tarot Card representing joyful surprises coming your way. This card also indicates that contentment is a right, regardless of ethnic, racial, sexual, religious, or cultural background. The traditional image of the card shows a community, which works hard, utilizes all luck thrown their way and has solid roots. This community understands that life has vicissitudes; therefore, they celebrate admirably when the occasion calls for it. The Four of Wands has an open-door policy, and we welcome all to step inside, breathe, and relax. You will find goods, gifts, and events for you to celebrate your unique life. Come by soon!
The logo, a cauldron with plants and magic inside stirred by a wand, evokes the question, “What’s brewing in your cauldron?” A cauldron is a tool that holds almost anything; sometimes our cauldron is full of cold hard things, sometimes it is bubbling over with ecstasy, sometimes it is simmering with expectation; what is brewing in yours? The Four of Wands wants to expand your cauldron’s ingredients, and help on your path of contentment, hard work, and joy.

Jacob Rieger & Company was founded in 1887 in Kansas City’s West Bottoms Livestock Exchange district. The brand offered over 100 alcoholic products and took pride in maintaining a quarter of a million unique customers by offering to mail-order delivery services. In 1919, Prohibition was enacted by the federal government and wasn’t reversed until 1933. J. Rieger & Co. was a casualty at the time but was not destined to be lost forever. Now, a century after Prohibition, we are proud once again to call Kansas City home.
